To take care of a 100% wool blanket, wash it as infrequently as possible, rely on airing and spot-cleaning, and follow strict rules to prevent shrinking or felting.

1. Routine Maintenance (Airing & Brushing)

• Air it out: Shake the blanket outside and hang it in a well-ventilated, shaded area for 24 hours to refresh the fibers and remove natural odors without washing. 

• Brush the fabric: Lay the blanket flat and use a soft-bristle garment brush or lint-free brush to clear surface dust and debris along the grain. 

• Remove pills: Gently trim or comb away any lint balls or pills using a de-pilling comb or fabric shaver. 

2. Spot Cleaning

• Act quickly on spills by blotting—never scrubbing—the stain.

• Use cool or lukewarm water mixed with a small amount of mild wool-specific detergent.

• Blot gently with a lint-free white cloth or towel until the stain lifts

3. Washing

Always check the care label first (some merino or specialty wools require dry cleaning):

• Hand Washing (Recommended): Fill a bathtub or large basin with cool or lukewarm water (below 30°C) and add a wool-safe detergent. Submerge the blanket, gently knead or swirl it for 10–15 minutes, and rinse thoroughly with cool water. Do not twist, wring, or scrub. 

• Machine Washing: Use a cold, dedicated wool or delicate cycle with no spin (or a very low spin) and a wool-safe detergent. Remove the blanket immediately when the cycle ends. 

• Never use: Bleach, biological detergents, or fabric softeners, as these strip natural oils and damage the fibers. 

4. Drying

• Remove excess water: Lay a clean dry towel flat, roll the wet blanket inside the towel in a tight cylinder, and press down to absorb moisture without wringing.

• Air dry: Lay the blanket completely flat on a drying rack or clean towels out of direct sunlight and direct heat.

• Never tumble dry: Heat and heavy tumbling will cause severe shrinkage and ruin the texture.

• 5. Storage

  • Ensure the blanket is 100% dry before storing.

  • Fold it loosely and place it inside a breathable or airtight container or cotton bag.

  • Add cedar balls or chips to naturally repel moths and pests.
