Mothers and Mother Figures Everywhere, We Salute You!

The origins of Mother’s Day in the United Kingdom are rooted in history, social customs, and the Christian season of Lent. During the Middle Ages, it was common for children, sometimes as young as ten years old, to leave their family homes to work, often in service or apprenticeships. Life could take them far from the places where they had grown up.

On the fourth Sunday of Lent, however, these young people were traditionally given the opportunity to return home and visit their ‘mother church’, the main church of the area where they had been baptised or raised. This day became known as Mothering Sunday, and over time it naturally evolved into a special occasion for families to reunite.

For many, the journey home provided a rare chance to spend time with family, particularly with their mothers, who so often held the household together in their absence. As the years passed, the day gradually became less about the church itself and more about honouring mothers and the care, love, and guidance they give throughout our lives.

Today, Mothering Sunday or Mother’s Day as we often call it, is traditionally marked by families coming together, sharing meals, and offering small tokens of appreciation such as cards, flowers, or gifts. More than anything, it is a moment to pause from the busyness of everyday life and recognise the important role that mothers and mother figures play, the love they give, the sacrifices they make, and the quiet strength they show every day.

It is a time to celebrate them, to thank them, and perhaps most importantly, to remind them just how much they are loved and appreciated.

Handmade In – Painswick, is co-directed by two mothers, and like many families, we look forward to spending Mothering Sunday with our own children. While the day itself is about time together, it is always a pleasure to give or receive something chosen with thought and care. We have curated a beautiful selection of unique, handcrafted gifts — pieces made with skill and intention, to help you celebrate the mothers and mother figures in your life and let them know just how special they truly are.
